Born of one man’s passionate interest in plants, the gardens were created by E.A.  Bowes (1865-1954) an expert botanist, gardening writer, author, artist, benefactor and Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Neglected and forgotten for 30 years, under layers of ivy and bramble, this unique and romantic garden has undergone painstaking restoration and refurbishment in the “style of Mr Bowles” since 1984. Now many rare and fascinating trees, shrubs and plants which made the garden justly famous in his lifetime can be seen and enjoyed. The excellence of the gardens was recognised in 2008 by the award of a green flag.

Forty Hall in North Enfield is a grade one listed building and was built in 1629 for Sir Nicholas Rainton, a City Alderman, President of St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Lord Mayor of London. He was a haberdasher, making money importing silks and taffeta from Italy.

Today, the hall is set in a 273-acre estate set on the edge of the green belt and within a conservation area. It is the perfect place to enjoy long or short walks as well as relaxing in the formal gardens or playing in the wildflower meadows. The hall grounds contain an ornamental lake as well as one of the oldest surviving cedar trees in the country.
