Which? Gardening at Capel Manor

Which? Gardening magazine, part of the consumer organisation Which?, has its trial and demonstration gardens based at Capel Manor College.

Here, research is carried out on mainly ornamental plants, but also some fruit and vegetables, to find the best and most reliable varieties available to amateur gardeners. The research takes place in the large trial beds to the north of the Capel Manor gardens. At any time of year, visitors to the garden will be able to walk around the trial beds and view the varieties on test. All trials conducted at Capel Manor College are then written up into magazine articles where subscribers can read about the best varieties on test.

Which? Gardening has three members of staff based at Capel Manor College who conduct, record and assess trials and write magazine articles. These are Janice Shipp, Laura Clifton and Emma Crawforth.

A large percentage of ‘plant-based’ Which? Gardening research is carried out at the Capel Manor site and the very popular ‘In Your Garden’ article is always photographed here. Many more trials are also photographed around Capel Manor, such as tests into tools, equipment and various gardening-related products, while the tests of these products are conducted in secret laboratories around the country.

Which? Gardening conduct twenty or more trials every year at Capel Manor which include trials of herbaceous perennials, flowering bulbs, new ornamental seed varieties, basket and container plants as well as testing novel techniques in areas such as companion planting and composting.

Which? Gardening subscribers are entitled to free Capel Manor Garden entrance most days of the year.

Please feel free to ask about Which? Gardening’s work here and any queries about membership subscription to the magazine.
